I believe there is an opportunity to
improve on earbuds, specifically by making a type of earbud that guarantees
durability, for something like at least a year.
Like most people I know, especially
younger people from the ages of about 13-30, I am almost always listen to music
with my earbuds. They have been a very important part of my day-to-day life for
about 10 years now, and when they break, it can aggravate me for days, up until
I get a replacement pair. There are companies out there who make “durable”
earbuds, but none who produce earbuds that are durable enough to last more than
a few months for someone who lives even a moderately active lifestyle.
I am about 60% sure this opportunity
exists
Here are what the prototypical
customers I spoke to said:
Customer 1: I also have this problem! I
constantly have to replace them and it’s frustrating! They break because the because
they get tangled and the wires are often poorly made in regards to durability.
This has been a problem for me for as long as I have been using earbuds! My
current way of dealing with it is just to not use my earbuds as often in order
to extend their longevity.
Customer 2: I would love it if earbuds
were more durable. I’m always breaking them somehow, mostly because I’m sitting
or stepping on them. It has been an issue from when I first started using them,
and my current solution is to just buy cheap headphones as replacements because
I know they’re going to break anyway.
Customer 3: I have also had the same
issue, ever since I’ve started using them. I have to buy headphones in bulk and
store them in a safe place because I know I’m going to go through them rather
quickly. I also try my best to keep them untangled. A headphone company that
was able to market the fact that they’re headphones were significant more durable
than others would corner the market!
Reflection:
At first, I wasn’t very confident in
this opportunity being something that others would resonate with so highly. I
was thinking that maybe it was just an issue that I faced because I am “bad”
with headphones, but as it turns out, there are plenty of other people who face
the same issue.
I believe that my original opportunity
is still all the way there, and I am actually more confident in it now after
having spoken to others about it.
I believe that entrepreneurs should definitely
take into account customer feedback, because there is no use in trying to offer
a product that no one is going to want. (There is, however, the possibility to
create a demand.)
Great thoughts. It seems as if your interviews all had the same unanimous opinion. However, I would of liked to know more about the price range of earbuds your buying? are they getting $4-$10 earbuds? $50-$75 earbuds? that way you can get a deeper understanding of the target market that should be reached too with a solution. Beyond that, what if a good and reliable warranty is the solution?
ReplyDeleteJoshua, I usually use the basic iPhone headphones and I have discovered that they are very cheaply made for the price of around 30 dollars. I honestly have not met anyone who has had those headphones longer than half a year. I also believe that headphones are very easy to lose and there really should be a way for someone to find headphones easily.
