8A - Solving The Problem

The opportunity I would like to exploit is the one from the previous exercise, 7A. I feel that students should have more time in their schedules to build a resume that is going to be competitive to employers. Many students would like to be involved in extracurriculars and outside work opportunities that would make their resumes stronger, but often do not have time because they are studying and doing homework. Classes often require several hours a week to be successful, and for students with busy schedules, it often causes a conflict.

I believe a strong solution to this problem would be to allow students to decide when their homework should be do based on their schedule (within the confines of a certain set of dates, maybe). A good way to do this would be to come up with some sort of modified form of canvas that allows students to schedule their due dates. This would put the power back in the hands of the students, and will make it easier for them to build strong skills outside of the classroom without having to sacrifice their GPA or sleep to get them.

  1. Thanks for sharing that Joshua. I agree that students would like to have stronger resumes by adding more extracurriculars and outside work experience but because of their schedule, they often don't have the time too. I also believe that because of their economic situations they might not have the time too. Have you thought about the full time student that is also a full time employee? These are usually the people I admire, they do it out of necessity- and they seem to make it work. Im curious to see the input of a faculty member or teacher on this.

  2. I really like this idea. It allows students to have more responsibility in deciding their success in classes and how their day-to-day lives unfold throughout the semester. I think this would be pretty tough to implement unfortunately because for current students who are having success with the current system they would be caught extremely off-guard by the change and an uproar of backlash would ensue. If there was some way to slowly integrate it into the lives of students or even make a separate program for the school that students are allowed to apply for to have the ability to create their own time management situations I think that would be the most realistic.
