9A - Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Interview #1
This person is a student. However, the person is a music student with the intention of becoming a professor at the University. Since their major and academic life so closely coincides with their career goals, this problem doesn't affect them as much as it would someone else.

Interview #2
This person is a senior engineering student. They are also a victim of their workload stopping them from building a strong resume, but their father owns a small engineering company, so they are guaranteed experience when they graduate.

Interview #3
This person is an art major. Since the development of their skill depends so heavily on the assignments and curriculums of their classes, lessening their workload would actually be hurting them.

Interview #4
This person is a Digital Arts and Sciences Major. They intend on being a graphic designer for advertising companies. They feel that being restricted to the deadlines and workload of their classes is helping to better prepare them for the actual workforce.

Interview #5
This person is also an engineering student. They did not care about the workload and deadlines for the same reason that the Digital Arts and Sciences Major stated.

Conclusion:
Who: My problem and solution is restricted to students, so the only students who fall outside the boundaries are the ones who have guaranteed jobs or the ones who simply don't care for the solution/like the way things are now.

What: The need I identified differs from other needs when they have a guaranteed job path or are comfortable with the current system.

Why: The causes for those outside the boundary are simple. They simply don't need the time or don't want it.

Inside The Boundary:
Who
Students who need to build stronger resumes and don't have time because of class.
What
The need to build stronger resumes.
Why
To make themselves more competitive when they get into industry.

Outside the Boundary
Who
People who have jobs guaranteed or people who like the current system
What
They don't care about having more time.
Why
They simply don't need it.

  1. Great research! It is true that some student said these strict deadlines helps prepare them for the real workforce. And I would like to bring up another point I saw in interview #3. Would your solution actually be lessening the workload, or just moving it/ delaying it around? The reason why I ask is that moving it around seems like it would be the only fair thing to do, but would that really help students find other outside experiences? At the end of the day, they still have to get that work done.

  2. I agree with you Josh, I think it would be incredibly beneficial if we were able to have a larger amount of time to explore situations outside of school in order to prepare a little more realistically for our scenarios outside of school. While we are gaining the knowledge we need for the outside world I think that a lot of skills including social skills are severely lacking from our experiences in school.

  3. Hey Josh, you have conducted some great research and found some very interesting points regarding this opportunity. I believe that students should have more time that they can use to find opportunities that will assist them and gain some insight/experience in the field that they are trying to pursue. Including that in their resume can be very beneficial when looking for a good job.
